August 2001 meeting of Balcones Forge
Lee Lanford, former student of Bill Bastas, demonstrated aluminum forging techniques for us. Aluminum is quite forgeable...unless you get it red hot. Then it's a liquid! Lee tests the heat by rubbing a stick of wood on the hot aluminum. When the wood leaves a thick dark streak of carbon, the aluminum is ready to hit.

Lee heated his aluminum in this very neat propane forge designed and made by Bill Bastas. |

Jerry Achterberg showed us how to polish up deer antlers and turn them into attractive handles for knives, etc. |
