August 2001 meeting of Balcones Forge

Lee Lanford, former student of Bill Bastas, demonstrated aluminum forging techniques for us.

Aluminum is quite forgeable...unless you get it red hot.  Then it's a liquid!  Lee tests the heat by rubbing a stick of wood on the hot  aluminum.  When the wood leaves a thick dark streak of carbon, the aluminum is ready to hit.

Lee heated his aluminum in this very neat propane forge designed and made by Bill Bastas.

Jerry Achterberg showed us how to polish up deer antlers and turn them into attractive handles for knives, etc.
